Gallery 128
February 7 to March 3, 2007
Reception Wednesday, February 7, 6-8
New York City: Gallery onetwentyeight is proud to present „Funny women“, a show of funny, sad strong and opinionated art by female artists from around the world. The exhibit was inspired by a visit to Linz Austria and a nearby museum created in an old jailhouse by Londoner, Nicholas Treadwell, whose museum specializes in humorous art. There will be a reception Wednesday, February 7, 6-8pm.
In March 2006, artist & gallery director Kazuko Miyamoto was in a cafe in Linz with several Austrian women artists. Sensing a conflict among her Austrian friends, Kazuko decided to show them humorous postcards from the museum to ease the tension. They began laughing at one card in particular with a typical male chauvinist joke. From that moment, she decided to create an exhibition of women’s art having a sense of humor and now gathered, are the results. Women artists from New York, Munich, Madrid, Japan, Austria & Italy express not only the humorous, but also offer in these artworks, a thoughtful and philosophical visual commentary on today’s world.
